Ulster County’s Premier Private Cigar Lounge is Now in its 12th. Year
Ten years ago, a piece of Kingston's cigar culture went dark. The Uptown Cigar Company, a beloved retailer and meeting spot for cigar aficionados, permanently closed its doors, leaving dozens of patrons without a well-appointed lounge to gather for fellowship and a puff of their favorite premium handmade cigar.
The void didn't last long. A few dedicated patrons decided the lounge's spirit was worth preserving. They pooled their resources, rented commercial space, and by 2012, they had created Kingston's first and only private cigar club. Today, the club boasts over 50 committed members.
More Than a Smoke: A 24/7 Lifestyle
“We wanted a place where like-minded people could go to enjoy their friends, smoke a cigar, and do so whenever they want,” said Joseph Ingarra, a founding club member. “The club is open 24 hours a day, year-round.”
In addition to being a social outlet, Ingarra stresses that cigar smoking is a lifestyle that demands time and comfort. "Depending on the size, a cigar sitting could last from one to two hours, and it’s tough to socialize during the winter months."
The 1,200-square-foot, two-room lounge is designed for comfort and connection. Members enjoy over a dozen leather chairs, three big-screen TVs, Wi-Fi access, and even a dedicated desk for those who need to mix business with pleasure.
A Diverse Membership with a Charitable Heart
The club’s membership reflects a wide cross-section of the community. “Our membership consists of active and retired police officers and firemen, tradesmen, and professionals in law, advertising, healthcare, and numerous other professions,” noted Martin Diano, who recently completed his first year as a member. Diano relocated from Arizona in 2022 and quickly understood the club’s necessity. “My first winter here, there was no way I could or would sit outside in 10-degree temperatures for an hour or longer.”
Created as a not-for-profit social club, the members also have a strong philanthropic component. They dedicate their efforts to supporting the community by donating annually to local veterans' organizations and active military personnel. These crucial funds are largely raised through the club’s three annual cigar dinners.
